According to Cointelegraph, one million People in South Korea have given up their physical driver’s licenses to use a digital blockchain driver’s license that is combined with PASS, a mobile app. That’s more than 3% of all South Korean drivers.

Millions of license on the chain

In September 2019, South Korea’s Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology approved a plan.Under the plan, South Korea’s three major mobile operators SK, KT and LG U will all operate an app to store digital versions of their drivers’ licenses on customers’ phones.South Korean police have also opened a green channel for the project.

The app is called PASS, and drivers can use PASS to scan their existing driver’s license. The licenses are approved by police software and uploaded to a blockchain platform that uses police servers.Once the driver uploads the scan results, the app generates a QR code.By scanning the QR code, officers can check the digital license on their mobile phone.

In order to ensure the authenticity and validity of the electronic driver’s license, the authentication system of mobile operators and the driver’s license management system of the police department will realize linkage based on the blockchain network to synchronously verify the authenticity of mobile phone user information. Each user’s e-driver’s license can only be registered on a mobile phone under his/her name through a mobile operator, and no phone or fake driver’s license applied for in someone else’s name can be registered.

The blockchain-enabled solution will help reduce costs and prevent crime caused by id card loss and theft, the Ministry said.

The program was officially launched in May, and in July, 27 driving test centers in South Korea were using the PASS app to renew and re-issue digital licenses.According to Cointelegraph, one million South Koreans have now taken advantage of blockchain’s electronic driver’s license.

Some convenience stores in South Korea are now accepting electronic driver’s licenses instead of id CARDS when buying cigarettes and alcohol, which require adult identification, according to Goh Sai-hyun, vice President of SK Telecom.
